Aftermath of the Kilauea Volcano Disaster, 2018
After evacuation on May 11, 2018, all Red Road Press enterprise ceased and projects are on temporary hold. We await rebuilding of public roadways and access to our office and workshop spaces.
What We Do
Red Road Press publishes books, comics, chapbooks, greeting cards, and maps. Subject matter highlights life and farming on Hawai’i, the “Big Island.” Sustainable agro-forestry and agro-tourism are topics of interest.
Our location is the extreme south-eastern area of South Puna on Route 132 a couple of miles from Kapoho, a town with its own post office covered by lava flow in 1955-1960. During May – August, 2018, Kapoho Bay and its community of houses along the water’s edge was completely covered over by lava. The Red Road now starts at Isaac Hale Park and Pohoiki Beach and extends to Kalapana.
Programs and Workshops
Literary and cultural programs are offered by the editors to local residents and visitors. Occasional short writing workshops are offered by award-winning writing instructors at no charge to local residents. Visitors may also participate for a nominal fee. Events are announced on this Red Road Press website, on social media, and traditional news outlets.
We are dedicated to local artists and writers, but will consider any worthy project that features Hawai’i. Red Road Press is very small and publishes a limited number of books or chapbooks each year. Prospective authors and artists may submit a proposal consisting of: 1) a description of the completed project on one double-spaced typed page; 2) samples up to five pages of comic or greeting card artwork or an excerpt from the completed text; 3) a one-page typed description of your marketing plan and personal social media network for promoting the book, comic, map, or greeting cards.
Send proposals to lead future workshops to: Peat.Travelwriter at gmail.com
Or use USPS: L. P. O’Neil, Red Road Press, Box 1046, Pahoa, HI 96778. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you want the materials returned. Please do not send your only copy of artwork or written text.
